Overview
Hypomagnesemia is having a serum magnesium concentration of <1.3 mEq/L, while hypermagnesemia is having a serum magnesium concentration of >2.2 mEq/L.
The usual signs and symptoms of hypomagnesemia include muscle weakness, ataxia, Trousseau and Chvostek signs, carpopedal spasms, depression, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, and carbohydrate intolerance.
While those with hypermagnesemia may experience hypotension, bradycardia, ECG abnormalities, depressed respiration and apnea, depressed mental status, muscle weakness, and paralysis.
